Working with a Legal Recruiter in Dallas

With more than 10,000 practicing lawyers in the Dallas metro area and over 500 local law firms, legal departments can quickly become overwhelmed by applications that don’t match the specific skills or cultural fit needed. Recruiters help narrow the field through targeted candidate screening and by leveraging their networks within Dallas’s corporate sector, including connections to Fortune 500 companies headquartered here such as AT&T and Southwest Airlines. This ensures employers gain access to attorneys who not only meet technical requirements but also align with their organizational goals.

For attorneys, Dallas presents the opposite challenge: a market so large and competitive that standing out can be difficult. Corporate law, healthcare law, and intellectual property roles are particularly in demand, but competition for these high-profile positions can be intense.

Legal recruiters assist candidates by positioning them strategically with firms and in-house legal teams, highlighting their specialized expertise, and connecting them with opportunities that may not be advertised publicly. In a city as dynamic as Dallas, having a recruiter’s guidance can make the difference between being overlooked and landing a role that advances your career.

Job Opportunities

Dallas Texas skyline

Rapid growth has unleashed new career possibilities for the city’s over 10,000 attorneys, including those that practice at one of Dallas’ over 500 law firms. The average salary for a lawyer in the greater metro area is $174,106, many of whom practice for, or provide legal support to, the 21 Fortune 500 companies that call Dallas home.

While practicing in the Dallas area, lawyers can take advantage of countless professional career-enrichment opportunities by joining one of these legal organizations:

  • State Bar of Texas
  • Dallas Bar Association
  • North Dallas Bar Association
  • Denton County Bar Association
  • Dallas Asian American Bar Association

For attorneys interested in teaching law or taking additional coursework, there’s also Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. Explore the legal market and job opportunities for Dallas in-depth with these guides:

Requirements to Practice Law

To be admitted to the Texas bar, you must have a law degree from an ABA-accredited law school in the U.S. In addition, all attorneys who want to practice in the state of Texas must:

  • Pass the Texas Bar Exam.
  • Pay a bar exam fee. For in-state law students it’s $300, out-of-state law students pay $490.
  • Pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) with a scaled score of 85 or above.
  • Once all those requirements have been met, be sworn in at an official swearing-in ceremony scheduled by the Texas Bar Examiners’ Office.

To keep your law license in Texas, newly licensed attorneys must complete 15 hours of continuing legal education (MCLE) within their first two years. After being licensed for two years, lawyers must then complete 15 more MCLE hours on an annual basis, including 3 hours in legal professional responsibility or legal ethics. All earned MCLE credits must also be reported yearly to the Texas Bar Examiners’ office.

Licensing and Bar Admission for Out-of-State Attorneys

Attorneys already licensed in another state who wish to practice in Dallas must apply for admission to the Texas Bar. This process requires submitting proof of graduation from an ABA-accredited law school, passing the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) with a scaled score of 85 or higher, and paying a higher application fee ($1,040 compared to $300–$490 for law students). Out-of-state attorneys may also be eligible for admission without examination through the Texas Board of Law Examiners’ Admission on Motion procedure, provided they have been actively practicing for at least five of the past seven years.

The process can take several months, and applicants should plan ahead if they intend to transition into the Dallas market. For guidance, attorneys should contact the Texas Board of Law Examiners and the State Bar of Texas. Many lawyers also benefit from engaging with local organizations such as the Dallas Bar Association, which provides networking opportunities while navigating licensure requirements.
