Founded in 1781 with only 44 residents, Los Angeles, California, is now the 2nd most-populous U.S. city with a metropolitan area that includes over 19 million ethnically diverse residents. Because of its ties to Hollywood and the movie industry, the “City of Angels” is also widely recognized as the world’s Entertainment Capital.
Los Angeles’ legal community includes over 25,000 lawyers, many of whom practice at the city’s more than 4,500 law firms, 1000s of corporations or numerous government agencies. The average base pay for those attorneys is $136,890, and professional development opportunities are available through:
- Los Angeles County Bar Association
- California State Bar
- 4 ABE-accredited law schools
- Various other national, state and local bar associations based on practice specialty, ethnicity, sexual orientation, personal interests, race, or other parameters
Requirements to Practice Law
Anyone seeking admission to the California Bar must first pass the state’s Bar Exam. The application fee is $650, and there is an additional $150 fee if you want to use your own laptop. All applicants to the Bar must also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). Once both of those requirements are met, you have 5 years to apply for formal admission to the state Bar.
The California Bar also accepts “reciprocity” applications from attorneys who have been practicing in good standing within another U.S. jurisdiction for at least 4 years if they also first pass specified sections of the Bar Exam. Once an attorney is accepted to the Bar, they must then take an oath of office. To continue practicing law in California, lawyers must complete 25 hours of minimum continuing legal education (MCLE) credits every 3 years and report those credits to the State Bar.
