All applicants to the Bar must also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). Once those requirements are met, an applicant has 5 years to formally apply for admission to the Bar.
The California Bar will also accept Reciprocity applications from lawyers who have been practicing in good standing within another US jurisdiction for at least 4 years once they pass specific sections of the Bar Exam. After an attorney is accepted to the Bar, they must take an oath of office. To maintain a law license in California, lawyers must complete 25 hours of minimum continuing legal education (MCLE) credits every 3 years. For more information visit: www.lawyeredu.org.
Why San Diego?
San Diego is a vibrant, multi-cultural community where several languages are spoken and unique art, music, dining and shopping venues abound. Fortune 500 giants Sempra Energy and Qualcomm are headquartered there, and many residents are employed in industries like tourism, national defense, manufacturing, telecommunications, biotechnology, energy and international trade.
Area commuters take advantage of the bus, trolley and light rail services provided by the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), while the San Diego International Airport serves air travelers. The city’s cost of living runs higher than the national average due to housing and transportation expenses, which are partially offset by below average health care costs. Its bustling legal district is located downtown south of I-5 and east of San Diego Bay.
Some of San Diego’s better neighborhoods include Del Mar Heights, North City, La Jolla, Camel Mountain and Scripps Ranch. In addition to watching their beloved San Diego Padres play baseball, or taking advantage of the area’s sandy beaches, warm ocean waters and ubiquitous parks, major attractions for locals include the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla Cove, Balboa Park, Sunset Cliffs National Park and Birch Aquarium.
The mild climate in Southern California is a huge selling point. Low amounts of annual rainfall, no snow and an above average number of days with sunshine are all features of the San Diego area.
