The Legal Industry in Missouri

Missouri’s legal landscape combines the vibrancy of large metropolitan markets like St. Louis and Kansas City with substantial activity in midsized cities including Springfield, Columbia, and St. Joseph. The state’s economy, anchored by agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and financial services, generates broad demand for legal work in corporate, regulatory, intellectual property, environmental, and litigation practices.

Large firms such as Armstrong Teasdale and Shook, Hardy & Bacon maintain strong reputations in commercial litigation, product liability, and regulatory matters. With Missouri’s 542,700 small businesses contributing heavily to the state’s economy, many attorneys find work serving regional clients and specialty niches. As regional commerce and interstate business grow, so does the need for legal counsel in transactions, compliance, and dispute resolution.

Is it Difficult to Practice Law in Missouri?

Any candidate aiming for admission to the Missouri Bar must satisfy several clear but demanding requirements. Below is a breakdown of the essential steps:

  • Earn a Juris Doctor (J.D.) (typically from an ABAaccredited law school), or satisfy applicable equivalency rules.
  • Take the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) in Missouri. The exam includes essays (MEE), performance tests (MPT), and the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE).
  • Achieve a scaled score of at least 260 on the UBE to pass.
  • Complete the Missouri Educational Component Test (MECT), mandated by bar rules, no earlier than filing your bar exam application and no later than one year after passing.
  • Pass the MPRE with a scaled minimum score of 80 and have that score certified to the Missouri Board of Law Examiners.
  • Submit a formal application, pay required fees, and provide transcripts, references, and any required documentation.
  • Demonstrate good moral character and fitness, under review by the Board, including full disclosure of past conduct.
  • For eligible attorneys from other states, seek admission without examination under Missouri’s rules (e.g. Rule 8.10) if you meet the practice and reciprocity criteria.
  • Once approved, take the required oath and fulfill continuing legal education (CLE) and bar maintenance requirements to remain in good standing.

Whether you’re pursuing opportunities in Kansas City or St. Louis or looking to build your practice in smaller markets, our trusted network of Missouri legal recruiters can help you find the right fit.
