The Legal Industry in Pennsylvania

Out of the 1.3 million attorneys in the United States, nearly 50,000 practice in Pennsylvania, making it one of the country’s largest legal markets. Only states like New York, California, Florida, and Illinois contain more. Given that Philadelphia is the second largest city in the Northeast, it has proved highly competitive in fields such as finance and corporate law.

With a GDP of more than $800 billion, Pennsylvania’s major industries include fields such as agriculture, manufacturing, and mining. It also contains the significant historic cities of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Allentown, making tourism an important part of its economic base.

Lawyers in Pennsylvania have built their careers in various fields of practice, the most dominant historically being litigation. Other noteworthy specialties include employment law, government, tax law, and technology law.

Is It Difficult to Practice Law in Pennsylvania?

There are several steps that you will need to take if you want to be able to legally practice law in Pennsylvania. These include the following:

  • You will need to have graduated from a college or university that is regionally or nationally accredited.
  • You must receive a passing grade on the LSAT, attend an ABA-recognized law school, and receive a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
  • You must pass the Pennsylvania State Bar Exam.
  • You must pass the Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners fitness and character investigation.

If you pass, you will receive a Certificate Recommending Admission to the Bar, and you must submit an application to the Bar of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania within six months.

For more information about these requirements, please visit the Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners or LawyerEdu.org.

Note that attorneys from most states may be Admitted on Motion procedure in Pennsylvania even if they aren’t licensed in the state. Those not allowed are California, Nevada, Montana, Louisiana, Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina, Delaware, Rhode Island, and Maryland. Additionally, foreign attorneys may sit for the Bar Exam if they have completed a Foreign Evaluation Form and submitted required documentation at least six months prior to beginning their application.
