Requirements to Practice Law
To become a member of the Virginia Bar you must first earn a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and pass the Bar Exam. Lawyers from outside the US may also apply if they graduated from an ABA-accredited foreign law school. The Bar Exam fee is $475 and there’s an additional $475 fee for a character and fitness evaluation. Attorneys licensed to practice in another US jurisdiction can also apply for the Bar without taking the Bar Exam if they pay a $2500 fee and meet other requirements.
Once you’ve passed the Bar Exam and met all the requirements a swearing in ceremony will be scheduled. To maintain a law license in Virginia you must complete 12 hours of MCLE per year, with at least two of those hours in ethics and professionalism. To learn more visit: www.lawyeredu.org.
