Requirements to Practice Law
All applicants to the California Bar must first pass the state’s Bar Exam. The application fee is $650, and there is an additional $150 fee if a personal laptop is used. Those applicants must also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). Once they’ve met the requirements an applicant has 5 years to formally apply for admission to the Bar.
The California Bar also accepts Reciprocity applications from lawyers who have been practicing in good standing within another US jurisdiction for at least 4 years it they also pass certain sections of the Bar Exam. Once an attorney is accepted to the Bar, they must take an oath of office.
