Requirements to Practice Law

To become a member of the Indiana Bar you must first earn a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and then pass the Bar Exam. The on time filing fee is $250 and all applicants must also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE). If you are a licensed attorney in another US jurisdiction, you may also apply for the Bar if certain requirements are met. Foreign law school graduates are not allowed to take the Indiana Bar Exam.

Once you have passed the Bar Exam and fulfilled the other requirements you will then be sworn in at an official ceremony. To maintain a law license in Indiana you must complete a minimum of six CLE hours per year, and a total of 36 CLE hours every three years. Three of those 36 hours must be in professional responsibility.
