Columbus serves as the setting for 100s of law firms and corporations, including several Fortune 1000 employers. For those interested in career enrichment and networking, there’s the Ohio Bar Association and its 26,000 members, or the 5,000-member strong Columbus Bar Association. Female attorneys can interact with over 250 of their peers through the Women Lawyers of Franklin County (WLFC), and for attorneys with a passion for academia there’s Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law.

Requirements to Practice Law

For attorneys fresh out of law school, admission to the Ohio bar also requires passing the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) before or after passing the Ohio bar exam. If you’re already a practicing attorney in another U.S. jurisdiction, you can file for admission to the Ohio bar without examination through a process known as “Admission on Motion”.

Ohio Admission on Motion requirements include:

  • Having practiced law full-time in another jurisdiction for 5 of the past 10 years
  • Be a member in good standing of the bar in another U.S. jurisdiction
  • Never having taken and failed the Ohio bar exam
  • You are a U.S. citizen or resident alien
  • You intend to practice law in Ohio actively on a continuing basis
  • You meet all other requirements for admission (i.e. character, MPRE score, etc.)

Once an attorney has been admitted to the Ohio bar, they must re-register on or before September 1st of each odd-numbered year, and then pay a fee that’s been assessed by the Supreme Court of Ohio. For more information, visit the Supreme Court’s website.
