Requirements to Practice Law
Any brand-new attorney who’s seeking admission to the Ohio bar must first also pass the
Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) prior to, or after, passing the Ohio bar exam. If a lawyer already holds a license to practice law in another U.S. jurisdiction, they can file for admission to the Ohio bar without examination; otherwise known as “Admission on Motion”.
Requirements for an Admission on Motion in Ohio include:
- Having practiced law full-time in another jurisdiction for 5 of the past 10 years
- Be a member in good standing of the bar in another U.S. jurisdiction
- Never having taken and failed the Ohio bar exam
- You are a U.S. citizen or resident alien
- You intend to practice law in Ohio actively on a continuing basis
- You meet all other requirements for admission (i.e. character, MPRE score, etc.)
