Requirements to Practice Law
Admission to practice law in Georgia falls under the jurisdiction of two separate and distinct boards:
- The Board of Bar Examiners
- The Board to Determine Fitness of Bar Applicants.
Candidates can either qualify by passing the Georgia bar exam, or by Admission on Motion without Examination. The latter process is open to any attorney that’s licensed in a U.S. jurisdiction outside Georgia once they’ve otherwise met the required criteria and paid a fee of $900. For those passing the bar exam for the first time, admission fees range from $400 to $600 depending upon the timing of application submission.
When all requirements have been satisfactorily met, the Board of Examiners issues what’s called a “Certification of Fitness to Practice Law”. You can learn more on Georgia’s Office of Bar Admissions website.
That certificate is then good for 5 years from date of issuance, and renewal requests must be filed within 3 months prior to the document’s expiration date. The law license renewal fee in Georgia is $400 for applications that are filed on time.
Licensing and Bar Admission for Out-of-State Attorneys
Attorneys licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction may be eligible for Admission on Motion without Examination in Georgia, provided they meet certain criteria, including active practice for at least five of the past seven years and good standing in their home state.
