Requirements to Practice Law
Any brand-new attorney who’s seeking admission to the Ohio bar must first also pass the
Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) prior to, or after, passing the Ohio bar exam. If a lawyer already holds a license to practice law in another U.S. jurisdiction, they can file for admission to the Ohio bar without examination; otherwise known as “Admission on Motion”.
Requirements for an Admission on Motion in Ohio include:
- Having practiced law full-time in another jurisdiction for 5 of the past 10 years
- Be a member in good standing of the bar in another U.S. jurisdiction
- Never having taken and failed the Ohio bar exam
- You are a U.S. citizen or resident alien
- You intend to practice law in Ohio actively on a continuing basis
- You meet all other requirements for admission (i.e. character, MPRE score, etc.)
Once an attorney has been admitted to the Ohio bar, they must re-register on or before September 1st of each odd-numbered year, while also paying a fee assessed by the Supreme Court of Ohio. For more information, visit the Ohio Supreme Court’s website.
Why Cleveland?
Because of its higher average base pay for lawyers and below average cost-of-living, Cleveland is an attractive destination for those wishing to practice in the Great Lakes region. The main economic sectors driving the city’s growth include healthcare, financial services, biomedicals and manufacturing, and any list highlighting Cleveland’s major employers starts with the Cleveland Clinic, Sherwin Williams, Key Corp and Parker-Hannifan.
To accommodate commuters to-and-from the city’s bustling downtown Warehouse District, which also serves as the legal district and home to the Cuyahoga County Justice Center, there’s the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA). RTA provides bus, train and trolley services for thousands of riders every day, including those who live in the metro area’s better neighborhoods like Rocky River, Tremont, Shaker Heights, Chagrin Falls and Detroit Shoreway.
Cleveland’s climate has four distinct seasons, with July being the hottest average month (avg. high 82 degrees F) and January the coldest (avg. low 23 degrees F). The metro area experiences annual rainfall amounts comparable to the national average but does receive significantly more snowfall than many other parts of the country.
When it’s time to relax after a long work day, there’s plenty to do in Cleveland, starting with its over 300 scenic miles of bicycling, hiking and jogging trails. It also has many golf courses, three professional sports teams and beautiful Edgewater Beach along the lakefront. Other major attractions in Cleveland include dining and entertainment in the aforementioned-Warehouse District, Playhouse Square (performing arts), the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Westside Market and Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo.
