Requirements to Practice Law
To start practicing law in Florida, you must first earn your J.D. Degree from an ABA-accredited law school and then pass the Florida bar exam. The fee for taking the bar exam is $600 and once you’ve passed the bar exam, there is an additional $1000 filing fee for acceptance to the Florida Bar.
Lawyers who are already licensed and who have been actively practicing law in another U.S. jurisdiction for at least 10 years may also apply to take the Florida bar exam once they’ve proven that they are in good standing in that jurisdiction. In addition, all lawyers who pass the Florida bar exam must also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) within 25 months of taking the bar exam.
To maintain a law license in Florida, an attorney is required to accrue 30 hours of MCLE credits every 3 years, including at least 5 hours in ethics, professionalism, substance abuse and mental illness awareness. All credits must then be reported to the law examiner’s office. For more information, please visit: www.lawyeredu.org.
Orlando is also known as “The Beautiful City” because of the area’s many natural lakes, its
warm climate and friendly people. Signs of economic growth and development are everywhere and, surprisingly, most employed people work outside of the tourism industry. There is one Fortune 500 company based in Orlando, Darden Restaurants, but countless other corporations there are always looking for talented attorneys as they expand their business operations.
Orange County’s cost of living runs slightly higher than the national average due to housing and transportation, but its grocery and healthcare costs are lower than other U.S. cities. Reliable and inexpensive public transportation is available through LYNX bus and SunRail commuter train services, and air travelers can choose from two major airports conveniently located nearby.
Many local lawyers commute to the Legal District downtown near where I-4 and the 408 Tollway converge from some of Orlando’s better neighborhoods in Lancaster Park, Rose Isle, Lake Como, the Central Business District, Delancy Park or Baldwin Park. In addition to its golf courses, lakes and public parks, major attractions around the city include the NBA’s Orlando Magic, Seaworld, Disneyworld’s many theme parks, Fun Spot America and Discovery Cove.
Orlando’s climate is a major selling point, as during an average year residents experience more sunny days than other parts of the country, rainfall amounts that are slightly higher and no snow. The hottest month is July, with average daily highs in the upper 90s F, and January is typically the coolest month, with daily temperatures reaching a low of around 49 degrees F.
